Kiel, venue & rooms
The conference sits on the campus of Christian-Albrechts-Universität, a walk from the Förde and a short tram from the Hauptbahnhof.
Kiel is a maritime city first: navy yard, canal locks, ferries to Scandinavia, and a university whose marine desks sit on the same coast. Delegates usually arrive by train from Hamburg (about 90 km south) or by ferry into the harbour. A campus map and tram notes go out with the joining mail two weeks before the meeting.

About Kiel
Kiel is the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, about 90 km north of Hamburg, on the south-west Baltic and the south-east corner of the Jutland peninsula. Ferries run to Gothenburg and Oslo; trains to Hamburg; coaches toward Berlin and Poland. Kieler Woche still packs the fjord with racing boats each summer, but the working city is a shipyard, a canal lock and a marine lab.
Germany’s main Baltic naval base grew up here. So did IFM-GEOMAR and the university’s marine desks. The Kiel Canal remains one of the busiest artificial waterways on the chart. Cruise ships use the same harbour the ferries do.
The geographic spot — north of Germany, south-east of Jutland, south-west Baltic shore — is why this conference stays here. You can be on a wreck briefing in the morning and on the Förde in the afternoon without leaving the city.
Venue
Christian-Albrechts-Universität
Duke Christian Albrecht opened the university in 1665, after the Thirty Years’ War, with theology, law, medicine and philosophy. The state needed clerks; 140 students enrolled. The campus now teaches more than 22,000 people across eight faculties, including agricultural science, mathematics and natural sciences, economics, and engineering.
The coastal site is why marine research here has a reputation beyond the state. Plenary sessions use a lecture hall on the main campus; posters sit in the adjacent foyer. A campus map goes out with the joining notes two weeks before the meeting.
The original faculties of theology, law, medicine and philosophy are still on the books. Engineering is the newest. Delegates who want a look at the marine collections should ask the desk — GEOMAR visits have been arranged as optional field trips when boat and lab time allows.

Book early if you want to walk. These desks are the ones delegates used last time the conference was in Kiel; none of them is an official house, and rates change with Kieler Woche and cruise calls.

Houses near the Hauptbahnhof and the Schwedenkai cut the morning walk. Weekend rates jump when Kieler Woche or a cruise call overlaps the conference — book as soon as you have a registration confirmation.
